This Saturday, we commiserate or congratulate listeners from the neighbouring counties of Tipperary and Kilkenny with music that cuts across the divides: the slow movement of a piano quartet by Anton Rubinstein; Duke Ellington (see video) leading his orchestra from the piano, on "The Far East Suite" (actually a misnomer since most of the music on this album was inspired by US State Department sponsored trips to the Middle East); guitarist Chris Woods; 2 x Morricone, including a jazzed-up "Deborah's Theme" from a soon-to-be-issued CD; another selection from this week's featured recording by Anja Lechner and Francois Couturier; solo piano music by Bartók; and an early demo recording of a famous Bob Dylan song.

Friday night’s programme boasts the music of Soft Machine, interpreted by four saxophonists; we remember birthday boy George with a Gershwin tune (or two); Jasper van't Hof and Joachim Kuhn, from a vintage MPS album that's been made available in digital format; a couple of selections from a new recording by violinist James Ehnes with the Seattle Chamber Music Society (see video); Big Bill Broonzy's "Key To The Highway"; singer/songwriters Lisa O'Neill and Wyckham Porteous; rare Billie Holiday, re-issued from the mid-1950s; the 3rd movement of Beethoven’s choral symphony, which you’ll find on a newly-available 4-CD set on Naive, “My Favorite Beethoven”; and another selection from the 2014 CD "Moderato cantabile”.

Tonight’s mix of music includes John Renbourn, silly sisters Tabor & Prior, and young Irish/Italian folk trio The Morning Tree; Tokyo String Quartet (see video) from a newly-available 8-CD collection of Beethoven's complete string quartets;  Sarah Vaughan, singing of "the good life"; part of a choral work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts; singer/songwriter Laura Marling poses an awkward question (viz. when were you happy?); we'll hear a Soft Machine medley of sorts (compositions by Karl Jenkins and Hugh Hopper, as well as a 2007 recording by the Delta Saxophone Quartet); John Lennon's "Imagine", re-imagined; another cut from the 2014 CD by Anya Lechner and Francois Couturier, "Moderato cantabile"; Joe Pass stomps at The Savoy; and  Nick Cave bemoans people, in general.
