We close the month with a late night mix that typically stimulates and relaxes, viz. both Loudon and Rufus Wainwright; a new recording of "The Goldberg Variations" by professor/pianist Konstantin Lifschitz (see video); Louis Stewart recorded with McGill University jazz professor/trumpeter Kevin Dean; Wes Montgomery recorded with Milt Jackson; Martin Simpson, from "Prodigal Son"; part of Ciarán Farrell's "Shannon Suite"; Iarla Ó Lionárd, and the title track of "Foxlight"; the sound of The Memphis Jug Band; and a jazzed-up Paul Simon tune.

 

Saturday's BLUE also includes nyckelharpa-player Marco Ambrosini; original music by Leo Brouwer; plus a rare recording of Jeff Ballard made when he last visited Dublin (Jeff Ballard Fairgrounds - Ballard, with Lionel Louke, Kevin Hays, and Reid Anderson - will perform at Christchurch Cathedral next Friday night).

Friday's BLUE includes a recent batch of ECM releases, including kantele-player Sinikka Langeland; Charlie Haden, Paul Motian and Keith Jarrett recorded in Hamburg back in 1972; a posthumous title from Canadian flugelhorn-player Kenny Wheeler (see video); Eberhard Weber, playing an electric double bass of his own design; and saxophonist Chris Potter. We'll also hear original music by Leo Brouwer; Welsh harpist Catrin Finch; part of Hans Zimmer's "Interstellar" soundtrack; vintage Factory Records fare by Vini Reilly; a harmonica quartet from Finland; singer-songwriters David Sylvian and Tori Amos; the Danish String Quartet; and folk artist Eliza Carthy.

Sunday's BLUE includes includes cellist Pierre Fournier recorded at the Lucerne Festival, performing music by Pablo Casals; the  twin guitars of Nels Cline and Julian Lage; more from Abdullah Ibrahim, the South African pianist being featured all this week; folk singer-songwriter Chris Wood; Chiaroscuro Quartet, from a new CD of works by Mendelssohn and Mozart, out on the Aparté label; a curiosity by Ewan MacColl; Steve Jansen, from the deluxe 3-CD edition of "Slope"; jazz saxophonist Seamus Blake, singing and playing guitar; symphonic C.P.E. Bach; and the latest release from oud-player Anouar Brahem.

Saturday's BLUE includes a song America loves to sing, arranged by John Harbison; Anonymous 4's interpretation of "Abide With Me" as it appears on "1865", a CD of songs of hope and home from the American Civil War; we'll hear Ella Fitzgerald with the Ellington Orchestra; a nocturne by Fauré; original solo piano music by living French artist Maxence Cyrin (see video); Danish sing-songwriter Agnes Obel; more from South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim; Australian guitarist Craig Ogden, with the Howard Goodall Chamber Orchestra; Florida-born jazz singer Cécile McLorin Salvant; and a Shostakovich waltz.

In the 1960s, sound engineer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer set up the MPS label in the German Black Forest to promote European and American jazz. Over 400 MPS albums are gradually being re-issued in digital format. Tonight, we’ll hear samples from the second batch that's just been made available on iTunes, including recordings by Mike Nock, Red Garland, Jasper van't Hof and - playing a pipe organ, no less! - Clare Fischer (see video). Also coming our way this Friday, choral Stanford, from a new Winchester College Chapel Choir CD on Convivium Records; Argentinian guitarist Pablo Márquez, performing the music of Gustavo Leguizamón; late-night sounds by Danish jazz guitarist Jakob Bro; Dhaffer Youssef's oud complemented by the guitar-playing of Wolfgang Muthspiel; harpist Anne-Marie O'Farrell, in advance of the premiere of her song cycle set to Joyce's "Pomes Penyeach" in Limerick on Tuesday; cellist-cum-singer Naomi Berrill; something from the latest album by Cymin Samawatie; an original nocturne by Maxence Cyrin; new Neil Young; Sligo-born singer-songwriter Myles Manley; and a sample from this week's featured artist Abdullah Ibrahim.
