Tonight, we'll hear Bjork, from "Post"; drummer Karl Latham, leading a combo on a new CD inspired by Bjork's music; German drummer Eva Klesse, and her acoustic quartet; solo piano music by Australian composer Kate Moore; Scottish singer/songwriter Robin Williamson; an MPS re-issue of a recording by former Miles Davis sideman Red Garland; Gorecki's "Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs"; Brazilian musician Ed Motta, in advance of his appearance at next weekend's Bray Jazz Festival; the voice of Elina Duni; Luiza Borac, performing Enescu for piano; plus the last selection of the week by Sinikka Langeland.

Coming our way this Saturday night, a rendtion of a tune you may know from Telly Savalas (honestly!); Schoenberg's "Transfigured Night"; the extraordinary Chester "Howlin" Wolf; new music by Cuban-born Omar Sosa (see video); the opening movement of Violin Concerto No.1 by Shostakovich; a vocalese "Moanin" which features Jon Hendricks; the latest ECM release by Norwegian trumpeter Mathias Eick; kantele-player-cum-singer Sinikka Langeland; Finnish harmonica quartet Svang; Thomas Bloch, on glass harmonica; and Robert Wyatt, from "Comic Opera". Quartetto di Cremona has been Ensemble in Residence at the Societa del Quartetto in Milan since 2010. 2014 marked the 150th anniversary of the society - a milestone that was marked with performances of the complete Beethoven string quartets. The fourth volume of Quartetto di Cremona's complete string quartet recordings has just been issued on CD. On tonight’s BLUE, Eamonn presents the opening movement of Beethoven's String Quartet No.14 in C Minor (see video).

 

Also coming our way this Friday night, a jazz piano trio led by Giovanni Guidi; Patty Griffin with Robert Plant; a new recording of Shostakovich's ninth symphony by The Orchestra Of The Mariinsky Theatre; kantele-player Sinikka Langeland (this week’s featured artist); Norwegian tenor saxophonist, goat horn player, composer, producer and poet, Karl Seglem - with Christoph Stiefel et al; movie music by Clint Mansell; and a tune by Belinda O'Hooley and Heidi Tidow.

"Composing means finding something that I had absolutely no idea of when I started..." - the words of Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen. On tonight's BLUE, Eamonn presents a sample of his music from a new release on the Winter & Winter label; also coming our way this Sunday night, a jazz piano trio led by Giovanni Guidi (see video); violinist Rachel Kolly d'Alba's reading of a work by Ernest Chausson; a traditional song from Kosovo; a Matt Dennis song, as well as the man himself, interpreting someone else's material; two more performances by The Unthanks; a sample from a recent CD of concertos for the organ (composed by Giuseppe Sammartini in the early 18th century); a medley of Paul Simon material; and the latest recording by Sardinian-born, jazz trumpeter Paolo Fresu.
